Szczecin is the capital of West Pomerania, a port city on the Oder close to the German border, about sixty kilometres from the Baltic. Its best-known view is Wały Chrobrego, the early twentieth-century terraces above the river with the National Museum and the provincial government building on top. Across the water lies Łasztownia, the old port island where a marina now stands among the warehouses.
