The town of Cēsis is in Latvia, situated on the Gauja River Valley, surrounded by the outstanding Gauja National Park. Césis, northeast of Riga, is a wonderful tourist destination with natural beauty and many significant landmarks. The most famed building is the Cēsis Castle, one of the best preserved medieval castles in the country. Another important architectural monumental is Cēsis St John's Church, built in the beginning of 13th century, the largest basilica outside Riga. In Cēsis Manor House, also known as Cēsis New Castle, you will find Cēsis History and Art Museum. In the town centre there is the wide Unity Square, adjacent to the wonderful May Park (Maija parks) with ponds and outdoor attractions, with the magnificent Castle Park just nearby. Outside the town, the Gauja National Park, the oldest and largest of the national parks in the country, offers superb views, natural springs, biological diversity, hiking trails, splendid sandstone cliffs, caves and outcrops as well as hundreds of historical monuments.
