Piedmont, Italy
Piedmont (Piemonte) is situated in northwest Italy, at the foot of the Alps. The region shares borders with Switzerland to the northeast and France to the west, and the Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna, Aosta Valley, Lombardy and Liguria. This is the second largest region in Italy, famed for its fine wines and high-quality regional cuisine. In fact, the Slow Food movement originated in Piedmont's town of Bra. The capital city, Turin, is noted for its remarkable Renaissance and Baroque architecture, museums and galleries, gourmet restaurants, and old cafes along its boulevards and piazzas, such as Piazza Castello and Piazza San Carlo. Among the major landmarks, you will see the striking building of Mole Antonelliana, which houses the National Cinema Museum. Throughout the region, there are picturesque towns and villages to explore, such as the mountain village of Monte Rosa, Stresa on the shores of Lake Maggiore, and Barolo amid the vineyard landscapes of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato regions. Piedmont is a fantastic winter sports destination, with approximately 1,243 kilometres of slopes spread across inviting ski areas such as Via Lattea, Riserva Bianca, and the ski resort Alagna Valsesia/Gressoney-La Trinité/Champoluc/Frachey (Monterosa Ski).
