Martinique, France

Martinique is an overseas region of France, an island in the Lesser Antilles between Dominica and Saint Lucia, with Fort-de-France as its capital. Its northern end is dominated by Mount Pelée, an active volcano whose eruption in 1902 destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre and killed about 30,000 people. Since 2023 the volcanoes and forests of northern Martinique have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is known for its agricultural rum, made from fresh sugarcane juice, and it is the birthplace of the Empress Joséphine, the first wife of Napoleon.
