Marsa Alam, Egypt
Marsa Alam looks out on the Red Sea from the beach and from the Moon Resort, on the stretch of Egyptian coast running south from Port Ghalib towards Hamata. What makes this shoreline unusual is how close the reef comes in: the drop-off starts a few metres from the sand, which is why divers travel here for Elphinstone, for the dugongs and green turtles grazing the seagrass at Abu Dabbab, and for the resident dolphins of Samadai. Behind the resorts there is nothing but the Eastern Desert and the hills that run down to the water. Egypt keeps UTC+2 all year: the sun comes up straight out of the sea in front of the cameras, sets behind the desert, and the water stays warm enough to swim through the winter.
