Espírito Santo is a state in southeastern Brazil on the Atlantic coast, with about four million residents and Vitória, which lies on an island, as its capital. Vila Velha, founded in 1535 across the bay, is the oldest city in the state, and on a cliff above it stands the Convento da Penha, begun in 1558 and one of the oldest churches in Brazil. The mountainous interior, settled largely by Italian and German immigrants, rises to the Pico da Bandeira, Brazil's third-highest peak. The state is one of the country's largest coffee producers.
