Live Cams in Heilongjiang Province

Heilongjiang Province, China

Heilongjiang is China’s most northerly province, sitting at the edge of the country where cold winters and sweeping forests set the scene for wide, open landscapes. Its name means “Black Dragon River”, a reference to the great Amur (Heilongjiang), which runs along much of its border. The provincial capital is Harbin, a city famous for its ice and snow culture, fairy-tale light displays and a Russian-influenced past that is still visible in its architecture. Harbin’s annual Ice and Snow Festival draws visitors from across the world with giant ice sculptures and dazzling night-time lighting. The province is bordered by Russia to the north and east, with the Amur and Ussuri rivers forming natural boundaries. To the south lie the provinces of Jilin and Inner Mongolia. This position gives Heilongjiang a mix of cultures, languages and cuisines influenced by its neighbours.Aside from Harbin, there are several important cities worth knowing about. Qiqihar, in the north-west, is the second largest and one of Heilongjiang’s oldest settlements. It feels quieter than Harbin but has its own draw: the Zhalong Nature Reserve, where red-crowned cranes and a rich variety of birdlife make it a magnet for nature lovers. In winter, snowy wetlands and frost-covered reeds make it a silent, beautiful place. Daqing, in the west, is the heart of China’s oil industry, where vast industrial parks sit alongside green belts, and you’ll find a blend of heavy industry and local culture.Moving south-east, Mudanjiang sits close to the famous Jingpo Lake. Jingpo Lake’s clear waters and surrounding forests are especially attractive in summer; in spring and autumn, mist and changing colours add a dramatic mood. Nearby is Jixi, a coal-mining centre surrounded by hills and old mining towns. Further east, Jiamusi sits along the Songhua River and retains a strong agricultural character, with lively markets and seasonal festivals. In winter, frozen rivers become skating routes; in summer, the riverbanks buzz with life.Wudalianchi Scenic Area, known for its volcanic landscape, lies further north in the province. Its crater lakes, lava fields and basalt formations feel almost otherworldly and are among the region’s most distinctive natural sights. Further north, Heihe faces Russia just across the river, with boats sometimes moored along the border. It’s a quieter border city but offers an interesting mix of trade and culture because of its location. Nearby, the Greater Khingan Range stretches across the northern part of the province, with dense forests, hiking trails and wildlife. One of the most enchanting winter destinations is Xuexiang China Snow Town (中国雪乡), often described as China’s fairy-tale Winter Village. Located within the Xuexiang National Forest Park, this small mountain village is famous for its thick, soft snow that blankets rooftops in rounded shapes. At night, red lanterns glow against the white landscape, making the village look like a scene from a storybook.Heilongjiang’s landscape ranges from snowy plains and frozen rivers in winter to green forests and rivers in summer. Its climate, combined with Russian influences and traditional Chinese culture, makes it a unique region to explore. Local food, winter sports and festivals add to the province’s appeal, giving a mix of history, nature and modern urban life. Before you plan your trip, it’s worth checking the live webcams of Heilongjiang Province to see current weather and local conditions, so you can prepare properly before you visit.Population: 30.29 millionCapital: HarbinOther major cities: Shuangyashan, Hegang, Qitaihe, Yichun, SuihuaMain attractions: China Snow Town, Xuexiang National Forest Park, Jingpo Lake & Diaoshuilou Waterfall, Volcano Crater National Forest Park, Statue of the Eight Women Crossing the River, Mudan Peak Ski Resort, Beishan ParkAirports: Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB), Qiqihar Sanjiazi Airport (NDG), Mudanjiang Hailang International Airport (MDG), Jiamusi Songjiang International Airport (JMU), Heihe Aihui Airport (HEK)
